HOSTING SYSTEMS – A QUICK GUIDE

Website hosting can be an absolute mine-field. You can buy web hosting services for as little as £2 per month, but what exactly do you get for your money?

BUDGET HOSTING SYSTEMS: RESELLER SHARED HOSTING

Small web design agencies re-sell the services of established hosting companies who provide a low-cost unmanaged service (stacked high and sold cheap). Whilst feature-packed control panels will give you everything you expect, you’ll probably encounter slow-performance and downtime during peak seasons. There are also security implications of being hosted on a shared server if not correctly configured. If you can afford the step up, head towards more exclusive shared hosting.

RELIABLE HOSTING SYSTEMS: EXCLUSIVE SHARED HOSTING

Some web design agencies have tackled the issues with reseller hosting by deploying their own dedicated services and hosting an exclusive selection of websites on them. This will of course add more cost and you may need to sacrifice some control-panel features, but you’ll generally find better performance and receive better service. For the majority of SME’s, this is where the balance between cost-and-performance lies.

HOSTING SYSTEMS: DEDICATED SERVERS

Dedicated servers vary in cost dramatically depending on the support infrastructure, connections, software licenses and back-up procedures you need. The cheapest solutions can be found for around £90 per month (basic specification, unmanaged) but prices easily escalate as you add more “human” resource into the mix (mainly management and support). We can assist you with choosing an appropriate dedicated server as part of any of our services (we do not provide hosting systems ourselves).

HOSTING SYSTEMS: VIRTUAL DEDICATED SERVERS

Virtual dedicated servers are the latest “trend” to be followed by hosting companies worldwide. Rather than paying for physical hardware (as with a dedicated server), you pay for a portion of the performance and connectivity of a cluster of high-performance and high-availability servers. In doing so, you also inherit all of the security and management of the high-performance servers (as your solution, and many others will rely on them). We can assist you in choosing an appropriate virtual dedicated server set-up as part of any of our services (we do not provide hosting systems directly).
