FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #1: LET DESIGNERS DESIGN

Designers prefer clients that explain what they want to achieve rather than explaining what they want the site to look like (e.g. “I want to tell people how great the showroom is…” will give the designers more to work with and will motivate them more than a comment like “Can you put a big picture of the showroom on the home page…”). Remember, web designers work on projects all day, don’t be scared of asking what has worked well on other projects they have been involved with.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #2: DEFINE YOUR GOALS AND TEST THE WATER

Web designers and developers build websites on a daily basis and get asked to build all sorts of different solutions. When in the early stages of the project tell them what you want to achieve and see how they react. A good designer or developer will give you their opinion and share their previous experiences.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #3: GET FEEDBACK

Whether your site is under construction or already live, get feedback from people around you and perhaps even look into some external user testing. You don’t have to take any comments onboard, but you we either feel reassured or be able to push comments back to the design and development team. Experienced designers and developers will quickly “void” any non-pressing issues but there will be one or two golden nuggets that can make a big impact long term.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #4: BUY DOMAIN VARIANTS

Make sure you buy different variations of your domain name, if you own the .co.uk, make sure you pick up the .com if it’s available (perhaps even pick up the .net and .eu too).

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #5: GET GOOGLE ANALYTICS INVOLVED

It’s free and the data you’ll gain from it will help you decide whether your website is working or not.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #6: EMAIL STATIONERY

You can send professionally designed “day-to-day” emails directly from outlook. They’re not expensive and if they help to bring in just a few sales it was money well spent!

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #7: ADAPT AND CHANGE

The Internet evolves daily; make sure you keep up to speed with the latest trends and techniques. Not only can you benefit by being the first to capitalise on a particular route/technology but it forms a great pr exercise and talking point.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #8: LOW COST ROUTES

If a low cost service really takes your fancy, such as micro-sites or entry level SEO contracts, buy a few. It can be hard to weigh up the outcome of just one campaign (as you have nothing to compare it to) so try a few and see which one works best, understand why, and then apply it to the under-performing solutions.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #9: IN DEVELOPERS WE TRUST

If you find you’re completing a repetitive task over-and-over again (such as dispatching orders) and you feel it could be quicker, ask your web developers if they can speed it up. The more time you save yourself, the more time you can spend doing pro-active marketing and sales.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #10: DOWNTIME IS DEADLY

If your websites hosting is not achieving satisfactory uptime or page load times, change it immediately. People no longer expect to wait longer than a few seconds for a page to load and if your website is offline, it can have a negative impact on both SEO and Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) as people loose faith.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #11: DON’T BANK ON PPC COMPANIES

Pay-Per-Click management companies often charge 10-15% of your total Pay-Per-Click budget. Because of this, they will focus more on Pay-Per-Click than SEO. Pay-Per-Click should always be a secondary option, SEO is much more effective long-term.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #12: NO GUARANTEES

You may, throughout the course of owning a website, invest in third-party services that claim to guarantee a return. Nothing is guaranteed in regards to SEO or Conversion Rate Optimisation. Companies that guarantee results will simply give you a refund if they don’t achieve their goals – they essentially take a gamble. But always bear in mind they can not refund the wasted time and opportunities you may have missed by not achieving what you desire.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #13: GET A REFERENCE

Before commissioning a project, ask to speak to some previous clients of your chosen web design company or marketing agency. And in addition to asking about service and quality, ask about the return they have received.

FIFTEEN DIGITAL MARKETING TIPS #14: COMMIT

Web designers, developers and marketing agencies are all in business to make money. When in early talks try and gage how much their average project values are and see if they’re used to working on projects equal in size and stature to your own. It is sometimes better to be a big client for a smaller agency than a small client for a bigger one.
